An 18-wheeler may not weigh more than 80,000 pounds, according to federal regulations. The weigh stations scattered along our freeways are computerized so that when the truck drives over the scale, its weight is quickly calculated.
Some trucking companies have drivers who are also responsible for loading and unloading their own cargo. With specialized cargo, special certification is required to do this, and specialized trucking equipment. Examples are food that needs refrigeration and automobiles which need multiple levels of flatbed equipment.
Each type of cargo must be loaded and secured in the required and appropriate way for safety. The truck driver is also responsible for checking it periodically. Given how heavy a big rig is when fully loaded, it's crucial that the load be balanced, so as not to tip when the driver makes turns. On a long haul, a cargo can slowly slip out of position and impair the truck's stability.
