How to Ensure Quality Care

In Phoenix, Arizona and Taking Cases Nationwide

Even if you have done a thorough job of researching and selecting a high quality nursing home, it is always a bit disturbing to leave someone you love in the care of strangers. There are many ways to make the transition as easy as possible and ensure your loved one is receiving the quality care he or she deserves.

Visit Frequently

By visiting frequently and unannounced, you can increase the chances that the staff will take good care of your loved one. Make sure you visit during different shifts as well so you can get to know all the caretakers. In doing so, you can consistently monitor the job they are doing and keep them on their toes. When we speak with jurors, about these cases, the question most often asked is how often the family visited.

Participate in Care Planning and Activities

By taking an active role in care planning and facility activities, you can help ensure that your loved one's special needs, health goals and preferences for activities are continuously met.

Participate in Family Councils at the Facility

Many facilities have family councils that meet to discuss current topics affecting the lives of their loved ones in a nursing home facility. If the facility does not have a family council, you can start one. Nursing home facilities cannot prevent you from doing this. Organizing monthly meetings should be a relatively easy task.

During council meetings you can discuss the day-to-day care of the residents, whether staff members are or are not respecting nursing home residents’ rights, or if you suspect abuse or neglect of any kind. If council members have a complaint, they can present a united front and demand action immediately.
